Seed Storage & Regeneration
The University of Hawai'i at Manoa Harold L. Lyon Arboretum's Hawaiian Rare Plant Program has developed over the course of the last two decades to address the need for ex situ conservation of native Hawaiian plants. Currently it houses the State's largest micropropagation laboratory dedicated to growing native Hawaiian plants, as well as the Seed Conservation Laboratory (SCL), the State's largest Hawaiian seed bank.
In addition to serving as an active seed bank for conservation organizations, the SCL conducts ongoing research to determine the storage characteristics of seeds of native Hawaiian plants, and to find the best species-specific storage conditions. To find out more please visit the SCL webpage (please see the link below) where you can learn about the program's history and continuing research. On the Lyon SCL site the latest research documents can be downloaded in the navigation pane on the left side of the screen.
